Homesteading in Las Vegas: Chickens Are the Gateway Drug 🐔✨
It starts innocently enough.
You think, “It’d be nice to have a couple chickens for fresh eggs.”
Then a few fluffy butts move in. Next thing you know, you’re dreaming of goats, planning your garden, composting kitchen scraps, and using the word “broody” like a pro.
Welcome to the lifestyle, friend.
Chickens are the gateway drug to homesteading—and it’s a beautiful thing.
But before you start building a coop or collecting egg recipes, there’s something you must check first:
Are you even allowed to have chickens where you live?
🗺️ The Zoning Lowdown: Vegas Style
Las Vegas is made up of four different jurisdictions, and each one has its own zoning laws, animal regulations, and lot-size requirements. So just because your neighbor has chickens doesn’t mean you can. It all depends on your parcel, your zoning, and your city or county rules.
That’s why it’s absolutely crucial to confirm zoning before bringing home birds—or buying a home with homesteading in mind.
📞 Zoning Contact Numbers for the 4 Jurisdictions
Here’s where to call, and exactly what to ask:
1. City of Las Vegas
📍 Covers the central and some westside areas and you still need to get a conditional use verification as not all homes even in non HOA, you still have to register your home and confirm if you're legally allowed to have them.
📞 (702) 229-6251
🌐 lasvegasnevada.gov
Ask:
“Can I have chickens at [insert parcel number or address]?”
“How many?”
“Are roosters allowed?”
2. Clark County including Unincorporated Clark County
📍 Includes Spring Valley, Paradise, Enterprise, and more
📞 (702) 455-4314
🌐 clarkcountynv.gov
Ask:
“What is the zoning for my parcel?”
“Am I allowed to have chickens?”“How many chickens can I have?”
“Is there a lot-size minimum?”
“Can I keep a rooster?”
3. City of North Las Vegas
📍 Mostly north valley communities
📞 (702) 633-1537
🌐 cityofnorthlasvegas.com
Ask:
“Is poultry allowed on this parcel?”
“How many chickens can I have?”
“Are roosters restricted?”
4. City of Henderson
📍 Southeast part of the valley, including master-planned areas
📞 (702) 267-1500 (Ask for Zoning/Current Planning)
🌐 cityofhenderson.com
Ask:
“Can I raise chickens at this address or parcel?”
“How many chickens can I have?”
“Are there coop setbacks or number limits?”
“Can I have a rooster?”
📌 What You’ll Need Before Calling:
-
Your parcel number (you can find this on your property tax record or ask your Realtor 👋)
-
Your property address
-
Any notes about your HOA (some HOAs restrict chickens even if zoning allows them)
🐓 Why Zoning Matters More Than You Think
Trust me, nothing crushes a chicken keeper’s dreams faster than being told you have to rehome your flock—or worse, being fined for a zoning violation.
That’s why as a Vegas-based Realtor and mini farmer, I always help my clients:
-
Check zoning and land use rules BEFORE buying
-
Research if chickens, goats, gardens, etc. are allowed
-
Verify lot size requirements and coop regulations
-
Avoid HOAs with restrictive covenants
Your dream of fresh eggs and a backyard homestead shouldn’t come with surprises—only fluffy joy.
👩🌾 Chickens: The Homestead Gateway
Once those first hens arrive, it’s all downhill (or uphill, depending on how you see it 😆):
-
You’ll build a compost bin
-
Grow some herbs
-
Dream of adding ducks
-
Start researching solar
-
Learn what a broody hen is (and whether to break her)
Chickens spark curiosity, responsibility, and connection to your food—and they make incredible conversation starters.
